Good Vibrations

Everything revolves around music! We were guests at Hard Rock Hotel Davos and resided like true rock stars in the Swiss Alps.

My Stages

Rhythm & Motion

And again vibrations that flow like waves through my body! This time they went much deeper. The next ones are already merging with the circular movements of Sija’s comfortable, yet firm hands. I am totally baffled. And my brain? Seems to be completely undocked from this world. The frequencies have taken over my consciousness and full of ecstasy I surrender trustingly to this state of happiness. This must be what it feels like to take drugs and what true rock stars swear by, except that this variant has no side effects and even makes you beautiful.
It’s as if the massage doesn’t penetrate from the outside in, as usual, but makes its way from the inside out. Many times I have tried massages in hotels around the world and yes, they were usually a blast. But they were mostly very similar. I doubted that I would ever experience a surprising wow-effect. But now I’m lying on this couch in the Hard Rock Hotel Davos while my head is under a glass dome with a built-in speaker.

My eyes are closed while I listen to the sounds of The Doors or The Eagles, which resound in a completely different dimension. Rhythm & Motion is the name of this extraordinary treatment method at Rock Spa®, which is only available here. The world’s first deep and music-centered music series is based on vibrations, pressure and rhythmic touch patterns. After a good hour, the whacky session is unfortunately over. Time-wise, it felt like I only was in this alternate state for a few minutes. Totally forgot the time. Certainly a unique arrival! Out of the car straight to the rock massage! Can it get any better?

Rock adventure in the hotel suite

It is afternoon. I am sitting in my very spacious Rock Suite. A music lover can recharge his batteries in modernly furnished 94 rooms, rock star suites and apartments. One sleeps on designer furniture surrounded by rock star amenities. A yoga mat is already handy in my room for the Rock Om session. Or maybe you’d rather use Sound of Your Stay® and have one of 20 Fender guitars delivered to your room, complete with amplifier, headphones and video course? I’ve never held an electric guitar before. Reverently, I take it in my lap. I put on my headphones and try it out. A short adventure – I’m not cut out for it.

The origins are honored

Florian Gabathuler, F&B Director of the hotel, is already waiting for me. His good humor, warmth and temperament fill the entrance area, which of course also houses a hot Harley Davidson and a store with really cool shirts. He shows me the house with the extraordinary history. In the famous Alexanderhaus, which was built in Davos in 1882 by the physician Alexander Spengler as a spa house, the first Hard Rock Hotel on the European mainland opened in December 2017.

We walk through the kitchen and pass old mailboxes. Still attached are names of former professors who worked at the clinic. “We left them, as a keepsake,” Florian grins.

We then quickly rededicated it in our own way – with a table dance party.” Now it hosts banquets, private parties and weddings.

Traditions are meant to be broken here as well

The church organ is also still in working order: “Some guests actually like to play it, too,” Florian tells us. We go up one floor into the church tower. The room is often used for meetings and conferences. In one corner are comfortable armchairs that invite brainstorming. “What’s this string here?” “That’s the rope to ring the bell. It’s still in shape,” Florian laughs. I’m thrilled! I could have been here in Las Vegas visiting such a crazy place, and not in Davos, Switzerland, which has an unjustified reputation for being expensive and conservative only because of the G8 summit traditionally held there. This hotel, completely dedicated to the sounds of legendary rock music, proves: Davos rocks!
“You must be hungry! Let’s have a drink on our roof terrace first, though.” Cozy lounge chairs await us. Up here, guests can round off the evening chilling out at the rooftop bar “The 5th” with 360° views over Davos and the Alps. It’s summer, but it’s actually cold in Davos. No matter, the sun keeps shining through the clouds and the fresh air blows around my nose. And the view of the mountains is gigantic.

Through and through in harmony with the music

We go to the Sessions restaurant. The walls are decorated with memorabilia – outfits of legendary music stars of the past and present. They are pieces that were either donated by the stars themselves or purchased by the memorabilia team in the US. They are also the ones who then outfit the hotel. On the opposite wall in the restaurant hang two shirts. One belonging to Michael Jackson and the other to Elvis Presley. Surreal to see the clothes of these great stars. Florian also looks in that direction. I wonder how much these are worth. “Value? No one can give us a sum. It is immense! To even say – these pieces are priceless!”
We are handed the menus. The theme of music runs through here as well. It’s a record sleeve hiding two cards. “We have classic hard rock dishes as well as a signature card,” Florian explains to me. Both covers are adorned with an LP. Florian orders the soup of the day for us, prepared each day by a different staff member in the kitchen with reference to his homeland, a sertanejo salad with goat cheese balls, figs and mango, and a blues tagliatelle. I am surprised: the prices are moderate and absolutely fair. Sated, we then go to the bar, where a live band is already performing. “Tomorrow I’ll show you our area after breakfast. Do you like hiking?” I love hiking! Soon I go to bed and snuggle into the bed corners and pillows, whose pattern consists of loud little electric guitars.

A healthy and delicious breakfast awaits me the next morning. I ask not to sit next to Madonna’s skirt hanging on the wall. It’s so small and narrow in the waist that I would immediately condemn myself to a hard core diet. Around me, couples dine – from old to young, everything is there. And they all have one thing in common: they are music lovers! The atmosphere is so relaxed! Like at a concert of U2 or Depeche Mode.
On foot we go to the gondola and take it up to the Jakobshorn. We hike over the Tällifurga at 2568 meters down to the picturesque Sertig Dörfli. Ayayay, it’s beautiful here! Florian is patient. Again and again I want to pause at a spot – be it because of the view or the wonderful trees and plants! After a little more than three hours we arrive in the village. From there we take the bus towards Davos.

Follow my impressions

Not just food for the soul

“You have to try our burger today!” I gladly comply with this request. The fresh air has triggered a murderous appetite. I shower fix under the rain shower while sounds of music accompany me and hurry to the restaurant in fresh clothes. Jeans, shirt, some chocolates to feast and with that I’m ready for dinner.
It’s Saturday and the restaurant is completely booked. The staff has a lot to do, but they are all in a great mood! We sit near the stage at a high table. I am served the Evergreen Wagyu Burger in a black bun with sweet potato fries. The meat tastes fantastic. “It’s from a farmer here in the region,” Florian tells me. Above all else, they’re regional – some cool rockers.

The next morning, I unpack the yoga mat once again before heading off to my next destination. The Audi is already waiting for me and for its onward journey over the passes. Florian has also come to say goodbye.
“Come back soon! You have to experience Davos in winter!” He meant that very seriously and didn’t just say it like that. A friend once told me, “Music has an honest soul!” Hard Rock Hotel Davos along with its staff has proven this. It is the craziest hotel in the luxury class, which I was allowed to visit to date. If I had to describe it with a song? Born to be wild!
