A balance full of creativity
“Can you knit me a Yoda? I need an unusual gift for a dear friend.” Sana laughs on the phone. I’m in Germany at the moment, she’s in Sarajevo. “I’ve never made one before, but you know – I love a challenge! I’ll get to work on it in the next few days!”
Sometimes it’s the quiet things that touch us deep in our hearts. Handmade soft toys are one of them – they carry warmth, memories and a piece of soul. This is exactly what Sana, who works full-time as a manager in a large international company, creates. A job that is very demanding and drains her energy. To maintain her inner balance, she doesn’t look for coaches, yoga or meditation courses. She finds peace in stitches, yarn and colors – by crocheting and knitting lovely stuffed animals for children and adults.
The first doll – a little cat
Her first creation was in 1989: a small knitted cat. Inspired by her unborn cousin, for whom she first made a tiny sweater, she began to crochet and knit. This was later followed by other ideas for her cousin’s children, including a sheep blanket. After a long break – studies, war, return to Sarajevo – she found this passion again during the Corona period. She was looking for something that would calm her thoughts and bring joy at the same time. Today, she creates small, unique pieces that radiate warmth and security.
A handmade soft toy in just a few days
The time depends on the material and size: Small dolls are created in two to three evenings, larger figures in around five days. For fluffy cuddly blankets with animal motifs, she needs around a week. The choice of materials is particularly exciting: cotton yarn for babies, as eyes and noses can be crocheted in, wool or plush for older children. Each piece is customized to the recipient – unique and safe.
From Yoda to cuddly blankets – special orders
Some requests are unusual, like my own Yoda order. Although Sana didn’t know “Star Wars”, she took on the challenge – and mastered Yoda in great detail and with great dedication. This is exactly what makes her work so appealing: Each soft toy is unique, a loving gift – whether for babies at birth, for children’s birthdays or for adults who remember a piece of their childhood. “Yes, adults love them too – and that makes me particularly happy,” she says with a smile.
A soft toy is more than just a soft toy
For Sana, each item is much more than just a toy. “A soft toy is a memory, a joy, sometimes a comfort – something you don’t forget so quickly.” And hand on heart: who doesn’t still have one on their shelf that they were given as a child?
In addition to Yoda, I have ordered more of her soft toys to give as gifts to babies, children and adult friends. And she surprised me too: when I picked up my Yoda, she gave me Baby Yoda as a present. I laughed with delight and hugged him to me. Master Yoda once said:
