The new Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid 2026: Design, light and the emotional future of mobility

The new Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid 2026: Design, light and the emotional future of mobility 1

The new Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid was presented exclusively and symbolizes a new era of mobility in which performance, electric mobility and design form a harmonious unit. Its striking light design in particular – the “eyes” of the vehicle – underlines the emotional design DNA and clearly sets it apart visually from other models. A fascinating foretaste of the future of driving that shows how technological innovation and aesthetic impact are redefined in electrified performance.

The new Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid was presented exclusively this week – and with it not only a technological advance, but also a design statement about the future of mobility.

The future rarely comes as a radical upheaval.
Rather, it unfolds as intelligent evolution.

As the first high-performance plug-in hybrid from AudiSport, the RS 5 combines electric efficiency with powerful performance and enables over 80 kilometers of purely electric driving in everyday life – while at the same time retaining the dynamics of a high-performance vehicle. This makes it a realistic bridge between today’s mobility and a fully electric future.

A performance hybrid is a fascinating first taste of the future of driving, especially for those who are still approaching electromobility with caution.

A design that deliberately stands out from the rest

What makes the new Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid stand out in particular is its clear design identity.
Not overloaded, not arbitrary – but precise, muscular and unmistakable.

The widened body, the striking RS silhouette and the powerful lines create a presence that clearly stands out from other vehicles in the segment. Here, design is not seen as decoration, but as the visual DNA of a new electrified performance era.

Because in the premium segment, design has long since become communication.

Lighting design: The eyes of the vehicle and its soul

The lighting design is particularly impressive – and it is precisely here that the philosophy behind Audi Design becomes visible.
In my conversation with César Muntada, Head of Light Design at Audi, I became particularly aware of one idea:

A car is essentially defined by two things: its proportions by day and its lights by night.

When the proportions disappear in the dark, the light remains.
And with it the identity.

Muntada describes light not only as a technical element, but also as an emotional communication medium. An Audi must be recognizable at first glance at night – from near and far.

The light thus becomes the signature.
The language.
The personality of the vehicle.

I have experienced it myself:
The light communicates with the inside and outside world at the same time and magically attracts the eye.

Light, mask and identity – a philosophical reflection

“Lights are the eyes that draw to the soul.”

This idea goes far beyond automotive design.
Because we humans read faces. And more and more we are also reading vehicles.

Interestingly, the word “person” comes from ancient Greek and originally meant “mask” – a term from ancient theater, in which actors wore masks to make their roles visible. This is also where the saying that you should drop the mask comes from.

We also wear masks in everyday life.
At work.
In public.
In social settings.

But everyone is free to choose which mask they put on – and which identity they show.

Design DNA as the visual shell of the future

Applied to mobility, this means:
Vehicles also wear a kind of mask – their design DNA.

In the new Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid, however, this “mask” is not a disguise, but a deliberate staging of innovation, technology and emotion. The light signature in particular acts like the eyes of the vehicle, captivating people and creating an immediate emotional connection.

Light accompanies us from birth and shapes our perception of the world – it teaches us what is near, far, friendly or powerful.

It is precisely this psychological depth that is visible in modern lighting design.

Because mobility has long been more than just getting around.
It is an expression.
Experience.
Aesthetics.

And yes – beauty also has a social impact.
Beauty brings joy to life and delights not only the driver, but also people in public spaces.

This makes the new Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid not only a technological transition model towards electric mobility, but also an aesthetic symbol of a new era:
quiet in its drive, strong in its character and fascinating in its light – the eyes of the future.
