3 mysterious places in Bosnia and Herzegovina that you have to see 1

Where legends, stones and history speak to each otherBosnia and Herzegovina is a country that mysteriously combines past and present. Between ancient forests, rivers and rocks, there are places that tell of times long past – and yet still seem alive. Places where history lives on not in books, but in stone, symbols and legends. Those who set out on these paths are not just traveling through landscapes, but through thousands of years of human experience.

Here are three mysterious places where the soul of Bosnia still breathes audibly.

1. the obelisk of King Tvrtko I near Olovo – the unshakeable monument in the forest

Deep in a dense forest near Olovo rises one of the most mysterious stones in Bosnia: the obelisk of King Tvrtko I Kotromanić.
It dates back to the 14th century – a time when Bosnia first appeared on the map of Europe as an independent kingdom.

Tvrtko I Kotromanić was the first Bosnian king – a ruler who united the country politically and culturally and extended its borders to the Adriatic.

An old legend tells that Tvrtko was once hunting wild boar in these woods. He was seriously injured and barely survived. In gratitude, he had a monument erected on this very spot. Since then, it is said, no one has been able to move the obelisk from its place.

Its shape is reminiscent of Islamic gravestones, while the ornate decorations – spirals, rosettes, S motifs and woven ribbons – echo the symbolism of the stećci, the medieval gravestones of the Bosnian kingdom.

Some researchers believe that a Bosnian nobleman from the early days of Islam was buried here. Others see the obelisk as a royal symbol – a stone that unites power, faith and myth.

However, everyone agrees:
👉 The Olovo obelisk is one of the most important medieval monuments in Europe – and one of the most spiritual places in the country.

2. the stone balls of Zavidovići – the riddle of the earth

The quiet forests of Zavidovići conceal one of Bosnia’s greatest natural and historical mysteries: the stone spheres of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This geological phenomenon is almost unique in the world – comparable formations can only be found in New Zealand or the Arctic.

Around 60 spherical stones have been discovered so far, embedded in the earth and overgrown with moss and ferns. The largest of them weighs over 30 tons – the largest stone sphere ever found anywhere in the world.

“I found it by chance when I was chopping wood,” says Suad Keserović, the owner of the property.
“A tree fell and this smooth, round surface appeared underneath. I was curious and started digging – and there it was: this huge sphere.”

For some, it is the work of a lost civilization, created by hands that immortalized cosmic symbols in stone – similar to the famous stone balls of Costa Rica.
Geologists, on the other hand, attribute it to a natural phenomenon: concretion – the gradual deposition of material around a hard core.

Whatever the case, Zavidovići’s stone spheres seem to radiate something – calm, energy, balance.
They remind us that the line between science and miracles is sometimes just a thin line.

3. the Badanj Cave in Stolac – the oldest work of art in Bosnia and Herzegovina

High above the river Bregava, near the town of Stolac, lies the Badanj Cave – an inconspicuous place that holds one of the greatest secrets in the history of mankind.

Here, archaeologists discovered a hunting scene engraved in stone: a horse hit by arrows.
The artwork dates back to the late Palaeolithic period and is around 14,000 years old – the oldest known work of art in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the oldest engravings in Europe.

By comparison, the famous cave paintings of El Castillo in Spain are older, but they were painted, not engraved. Engravings are extremely rare – and make Badanj a place of unique significance.

📜 Some of the oldest engravings in Europe:

  • Roc-aux-Sorciers (France) – approx. 15,000 years old
→ Reliefs with animals and human figures
  • La Marche (France) – 14,000-15,000 years old
→ Detailed hunting scenes on stone tablets
  • Creswell Crags (England) – 12,000-13,000 years old
→ Engravings of horses, birds and abstract symbols

Anyone entering the Badanj Cave feels a silent connection to the first artists of mankind – to those who tried to capture the invisible in lines.
🗿✨ It is a place where time ceases to have meaning – and wonder begins.
