SUSTAINABLE ROAD TRIP WITH THE AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK

To the hidden waterfall Skakavac

The city of Sarajevo is located in the valley and is surrounded by a unique natural landscape, which is quickly accessible. Like the hidden waterfall Skakavac. A hike worthwhile especially in the winter time

My Stages

From Hotel Hills to Nature

Today I did not have to get up early. I have since moved to the Hotel Hills in the Ilidza district. Here I can charge my Audi e-tron wonderfully overnight at one of the two in-house wallboxes and from here you can quickly reach the mountains, highway and expressways to get to all the wonderful natural sites.

Our goal today: a hike to Skakavac waterfall, about 15 kilometers from Sarajevo. Skakavac translated means grasshopper. To this day, I have not learned why it is called that.

"The Power of Nature"

I visited it for the first time in summer a good two years ago. After about an hour and a half of hiking through the forest, you reach a small clearing dominated by a 98-meter-high limestone wall, from which a waterfall thunders down. The water shimmered in the light of the sun. The impact was so strong that even from a distance you got a pleasant shower in the hot temperatures.

I was fascinated by one of the longest waterfalls on the Balkan Peninsula! I stayed there for a very long time because the powerful sound of the water calmed me. Yes, it was this power of nature that made us forget about everyday life. We hiked further up to the other side to see the waterfall from this perspective as well. From this point, we could see how this natural jewel was hidden in the surrounding mountain forests.

When I asked Faruk if I could look at it in the winter, he explained that it would depend on road conditions. “If there is a lot of snow and it is not cleared, we will not be able to drive up in the Audi.” We were lucky! Although it had snowed, it was of manageable amount.

"A living work of art"

The drive up to the nature park was fascinating at this time of year. We drive up through the fog, which is typical in these months, until we reach a certain altitude. And then we break through this veil and are surrounded by snow-covered mountain peaks while the sun shines down on us. We pass some villages whose unpaved roads are popular routes for sheep. Actually, they take off as soon as they hear an engine noise. This is not the case with the Audi e-tron. They stare and are amazed at the object. It takes time for them to clear the way.

We park on the hill and enjoy the view and the warmth. The path through the forest is covered with snow and it is a lot colder. The sun has a harder time getting through here. No footprints are to be seen. We are the first ones to set out today. Only wild animals have already passed by. Again and again we hear a rustling and rushing of streams surrounded by icicles. I can remember every place.

These endlessly high rocks are now covered with huge icicles. “Don’t get too close,” Faruk warns me. “They can burst and are therefore dangerous! Look at them from a distance.” Even the bench is still here. However, it is too cold to linger here this time. We walk on. Whenever we pass a small clearing, the path is muddy and partly covered by rather wide streams. Therefore, good and waterproof hiking shoes are important for this tour, as well as warm and waterproof clothing.

Soon I hear the sound of the water, even though we haven’t reached our destination yet. “It’s always exciting to visit the waterfall in winter, because it looks different every time. It’s a living work of art.” Faruk has been here quite a few times and each time he is always excited. Sometimes, in very harsh winter seasons, the waterfall freezes completely and serves as a climbing wall for extreme athletes. Today it won’t be like that.

I can already see it shimmering through the thicket of trees. Water is there, but it makes its way through a fascinating icy landscape! Magical, magical, and magical again! I run to it. “Keep your distance! The water is causing chunks of ice to detach from the rock face and they can be very large. Look at the pile of ice in front of the waterfall.” And indeed! A mound of ice has formed where there is actually a hiking trail. “We will have to walk back again. There is no passing possible, because ice could hit us from above.” As soon as he said it, the noise is abruptly interrupted by a loud thunder. Before our eyes, a large broken-off chunk crashed to the bottom. Ice splinters chase through the air. We are far enough away. The water is so powerful that a wind is blowing. We won’t be able to make the drone go up either. We don’t mind. I let the cold water breeze blow around my nose and listen to the powerful sounds of nature.

We are all alone. Not another person in sight! It is gradually getting cold as we hardly move. We hike back the way we came. And even there, the perspective from nature seems quite different. We need just as long back as there, because we want to film things again and again.

Regional, organic and oven fresh

When we arrive at the car, the fog still hangs over the city. We seem to be in heaven, which is kissed by the sun. “Are you hungry?” Oh yes, I am! I’m already nibbling on nuts, too. “Don’t eat too much! We’re going out for meze. It’s all pre-ordered!”

Faruk guides me back towards Sarajevo to the Agro Turizam Ranch. The two sisters Sanja and Emina Tufo are already waiting for us. Emina is an enthusiastic cook and is already busy at the stove preparing our warm appetizers. She is just pulling a fresh loaf of bread out of the oven.

Sanja and her husband Sanjin are keen sportsmen and are behind the counter to prepare our tea and coffee. Everything is familiar. The whole homestead is in traditional old Bosnian architecture. The parlor is decorated with old objects from the past. And then there is the horse corner with all the trophies. Sanja is an enthusiastic rider and riding instructor.

The food is served. Traditional home cooking, regional, organic and fresh from the oven of course. Even the rolls are warm and steaming under the cotton cloth. This combination of cold and hot plate is an explosion of different flavors, which nevertheless harmonize with each other. Klepe, ruzice, pita, and, and, and … These are typical dishes from Bosnia and Herzegovina that are served as appetizers.

And yet, it’s very different at the ranch. It’s the way the table is set and the food is served. The decorations are playful, colorful and, of course, edible. Nuts, dried fruits, flowers. An explosion of color, laid out into a work of art. The tableware is also unique: from materials such as enamel, wood or fired clay, everything is represented. We eat outside in the sun, even if it is cold. But the sun and the wonderful view over the whole ranch prevails.

Horses, hospitality and fitness tips

Sanja takes us around the ranch, which her sister and she have lovingly built with the help of her parents and Sanja’s husband. Guests will feel like at home or visiting loving friends. Not only breakfast or lunch can be reserved here, two apartments can also be rented.

The ranch is also home to two Arabian stallions. Noble and spirited creatures, known for their elegant and graceful movements. Zanan and El-Kafi are eagerly waiting to be led out of their stalls. We let them out and already they gallop to the meadow and let their temperament run free. It is a pleasure to watch them!

When we say goodbye to young talented chef Emina in the kitchen, she does not let us go. First we have to try the freshly baked bread with fresh kajmak (Bosnian sour cream) and sudzuka (Bosnian beef salami).

Sanjin, Sanja’s husband is waiting outside to open the gate for us. The personal trainer is enthusiastic about the car. I ask him if he can suggest some exercises to do during a long road trip. He gives us some valuable tips. Now I know how a long car ride can still shape the body sexy.

"From the wellness mattress to the comfortable massage seats".

Arriving at the hotel, I think about how to spend the evening. The hotel has a large thermal bath incl. extensive sauna area and modern fitness studio. Unfortunately, I am far too tired to indulge in this wellness luxury. I lie down in the king size bed. It is one of the best mattresses I have slept on. Before I leave the hotel the next day, I meet with Nermina Sefer, the director of the hotel.

The friendly and attractive manager smiles when I approach her about the beds. “They are mattresses made especially for us. Because many guests ask us about them, the manufacturer named them after us and you can now order them for your own home.” Chapeau! Well rested, we’re off to Herzegovina today. From the wellness mattress into the cozy massage seats of the Audi e-tron Sportback. Truly, this road trip is a fairy tale come true!
